Assiniboine Park Playground Revival

I remember when I was around the age of ten, my parents took my four brothers and I on regular trips to the Assiniboine Park during the summers. I have a copy of some old film reel footage (converted to dvd) of us playing around on the old ox and cart that is at the entrance way off of Corydon Avenue. That video certainly brings back great memories of a park that I really don't frequent too much of late. However, I'll have to increase my frequency of visits soon. The Assiniboine Park is undergoing a massive revitalization which I can probably speak on behalf of Winnipeggers, is long overdue!

The revitalization is currently in it's first phase of the park development plan. The project dubbed "Heart of the Park" is estimated at $10 million. Funding to date is compromised of $3.6 million from the City of Winnipeg, $1 million from the Government of Canada and $1.6 in private donations. The Heart of the Park will include a  Nature and Adventure Playground, an enhanced Duck Pond and a family gathering place called the Family Centre.

Not to be biased but I think it's going to be an awesome revitalization! Wood Anchor has been spec'd in to work on much of the playground. We have reclaimed all of the cleared trees for the new playground area which will be used for the design and construction of the new structures and art. The videos in this blog will give you a brief idea and visual concept of what is being worked on. There have been no disclosure dates as to when this will be completed but visit back to see updates. I will share them as the project progresses!

Engineered Elm Flooring in Winnipeg's Urban Ecology Demonstration Project

Wood Anchor's Engineered Elm Flooring will be used in Winnipeg's Urban Ecology Demonstration Project. Part of a 4 year project put together by Canada Mortage & House Corporation, Winnipeg's team "Urban Ecology" is one of 15 sustainable building teams chosen by CMHC's national initiative to encourage builders and developers to build the next generation of sustainable housing in Canada. Dubbed the "Equilibrium Project", The demonstration will showcase homes that address occupanthealth and comfort, energy efficiency, renewable energy production, resourceconservation, reduced environmentalimpact and affordability.

Here's an excerpt released by Green Business below...

"The Government of Canada is pleased to work with the housing sector to develop such innovative homes. We congratulate WHRC on their winning design and commitment to environmental responsibility," said Minister of State Fletcher. "Urban Ecology gives people in this region an opportunity to see first-hand how we can create beautiful, healthy homes, conserve energy and resources, and reduce pollutant emissions."

Urban Ecology will integrate solar energy systems into its design and construction, in addition to high-efficiency appliances, water-efficient fixtures and building materials with lower pollutant emissions. A two-storey duplex on an infill site in an established downtown area, Urban Ecology represents a new approach to building in an urban environment. It also demonstrates how the principles of EQuilibrium housing can play a key role in the delivery of affordable, efficient and healthy housing as part of the overall renewal of Canada's inner cities.
